49ers Brandon Aiyuk receives blunt advice from Keyshawn Johnson over contract dispute

The 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk still haven’t agreed to a contract extension. This situation has been bubbling for months. It has been fueled on by recent trade rumors surrounding Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel during the 2024 NFL Draft. It didn’t help that the 49ers selected two wide receivers in the draft who could be their eventual successors. A former NFL pro gave Aiyuk some advice on his contract dilemma.

On a recent episode of the All Facts No Brakes with Keyshawn Johnson, the former star wide receiver gave Aiyuk some blunt advice about his contract situation.

“When I left the Jets to go to Tampa Bay, I could have held Tampa Bay up for way more money than I got but they made me the highest paid receiver in the history of the game,” Johnson said. “I was good, I was like okay whatever, even if it was by a dollar, I don’t even remember, I was like fine whatever it’s not that big of a deal because Randy Moss gonna jump me and leap from me next in about nine months anyway, so that’s the way I look at it.”

Johnson went on to suggest that Aiyuk should not play until he gets an extension. He also pointed out that other top receivers around the league have been paid recently. This only increases the value of a potential Aiyuk extension.

“He should be paid now, why wait, I’m not risk taking stepping on the field for y’all and I’m watching everybody else get paid. I done watched Michael Pittman get paid, I done watched Amon-Ra get paid, I done watched both dudes in Philly get paid, I done watched this other dude leave Jacksonville Calvin Ridley to go to Tennessee get paid.”

Should Brandon Aiyuk hold out until he gets a new contract from the 49ers?

At this point, it seems fair to question whether a deal will get done with Aiyuk before the regular season. If a deal does not get done, it is fair to question whether Aiyuk will want to risk suffering an injury without a long-term contract in hand.

Keyshawn says Aiyuk should hold out unless he receives a new contract with guaranteed money similar to players who recently signed new deals. Keyshawn says it doesn’t have to be higher than the other guys, but if it’s not similar now, Aiyuk shouldn’t step on the field.

TJ Houshmandzadeh, former Bengals star and guest on the podcast, weighed in on the best way to approach a potential hold out by using a fake injury.

“I’m going in there, and I’m going to run a route, I’m going to go in there run a route and say my back hurts,” Houshmandzadeh said.

Brandon Aiyuk finished last season with 75 catches for 1,342 yards receiving. AJ Brown finished with 106 catches for 1,456, and Michael Pittman 109 catches for 1,152. All three WR’s are 26 years old and in the prime of their careers.

If the 49ers do not find a way to retain Aiyuk, the team may have to play without him in 2024. Aiyuk would also become one of the most sought after free agents in 2025.
